When Julie and I got married in Goa 6 years ago, we didn’t plan on becoming co-founders too. But a few months later, we were scaling Chtrbox together, and now we're deep in building SuperStuff.
People always ask: “how do you work AND live together without losing it?” 🙃 Truth is, it takes work. And has its pros and cons but for us the pros outweigh like 10x. As it does for a bunch of successful couple founders we know.
Sharing a few pointers we've learned to help any other couple-founders out there considering (or sibling/ friend-founders for that matter):
- Straight up honest conversations 💯 Trust is the most important thing in a co-founder relationship, or any relationship for that matter.
- Clear roles – knowing who owns what piece (and who makes the final call on it) 🎯
- Separate WhatsApp groups for work vs. personal life (a must) 📱
- Communicate & plan daily schedules around each other - make sure there is sufficient “normal” time that overlaps 🗓️
At the end of the day, co-founding life and startups is about having the right partner. Someone you trust, respect, and can efficiently argue with. 😜
Grateful to have that in Julz! To many more together 🥂
